For the lot of you who’ve lost someone

14 Dec

I’ve been taking poetry under the DM Reyes and I’ve decided to try my hand at it. I won’t say I’m any good, given that I barely interpret 80% of the poems I’ve read/studied correctly. There will be no defense for this one, except that I didn’t think too hard about it and this is as raw as that gets. It’s been a bad day.

Oh one more thing: my mom died two years ago today. Has it really been that long? We just accepted a posthumous award for her at the 50th anniversary of the Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, where they distributed a book with a page that was attributed to her important contributions to the organization. I’m proud to be her daughter.

Second Anniversary

What hurts
the most is speaking
of what once is —
was;
can never be again.
Mama is —
was this.
Mama is —
was that.

I can never tell
the time
on a watch that is —
has stopped ticking.
